How Do Plants Filter Air?

Carbon dioxide is the substance that we exhale. When we breathe, we take in as much oxygen as the average person takes in and exhale as much carbon dioxide as the average person exhales.

When you breathe, the molecules of carbon dioxide diffuse into your lungs, then air passes into your body. So when you breathe, what is it that comes back out?

When you exhale carbon dioxide, oxygen enters your body. The carbon dioxide acts as a barrier to keeping the oxygen away from the other oxygen molecules. And so oxygen finds itself in the food that you ingest. And the food that you ingest is the very same food that plants produce.

If plants do filter air, the next question you should ask is, how do they actually get oxygen from the air? They produce their own oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. As the sunlight and the water are absorbed by the roots, the food that the roots have made is able to grow and develop. In the second pathway of chlorophyll, food that is not metabolized then returns to the atmosphere and is replaced by carbon dioxide and water. As the photosynthesis process continues, water, carbon dioxide, and heat is produced. These heat molecules move from the root to the leaves and then back to the soil. This is how plants filter air.

There are many reasons why plants filter air, but all are the result of photosynthesis. The reason that plants can absorb more oxygen is because they use a layer of roots called the rhizosphere, which is found at the base of the plant and which traps oxygen at high levels in the atmosphere.
